Things To Do Before Buying A Diesel Fuel Pressure Tester

If your diesel truck or car is running rougher or using gas less efficiently, it may be time to purchase a diesel fuel pressure tester and do a fuel pressure test. This tester makes checking fuel pressure easier than ever.

However, before you go ahead to purchase a fuel pressure tester, there are a number of things that you should do. If the fuel systems problems sound goofy, you will need to check that there is actually gas in the tank. Do not trust the fuel gauge even if it shows full tank because it could be faulty. Add about two gallons to the tank and then try another start.  In case the engine fires up, you should check the gauge for internal failure and do a replacement if necessary.  If you see the same high level of fuel with the new gauge, the issue is clearly a failed fuel sending unit in the gas tank.  Chances are the resistor has failed or the float arm is stuck.  The ideal solution here is to replace the sending unit.

Another thing you should do before purchasing a diesel fuel pressure tester is verify that the fuel pump works. Go near the fuel tank and have someone help you turn on the ignition switch. Listen for a two-second whir, hum or a series of rapid clicks when the fuel pump is pressurizing the fuel into the engine. If there is no noise, it means that the pump has failed or is not getting power. Go ahead and check the fuel pump fuse and relay. If they are both working, check the wiring to the pump. In case voltage is present when it is turned on, it means that the pump has failed.
